If your image is not visible from Google's servers, it may not get rendered on your map, depending on the mechanism that you have chosen to render your KML, which we can't tell, because we can't see your map, or your actual KML, or the image that you are complaining about.
Google's servers only need to see the KML file. They return to the client info which contains details of the icon, and it is the client that then uses the icon to create a GMarker.
