Yes, it seems that development on v2 goes on:

Current v2 redirects to 2.260
Current v2.x redirects to 2.268

But unfortunately the official changelog stopped at 2.242 and doesn't
seem to get updated any more

Also http://maps.google.com still uses v2. The present v3 obviously
doesn't suit Google's needs.
