Really? The reason I responded the way I did was to prompt you to look
at the documentation. I don't see radius listed there (nor ll, nor
ie). Even if radius was listed, I'm sure it would just be a number.

Supplying a parameter which isn't expected should just mean it's
ignored. So a request like
http://maps.google.com/maps/api/geocode/xml?address=10+Downing+St,London&ie=UTF8&ll=51.000,0.000&radius=200miles&sensor=false
will work, as will
http://maps.google.com/maps/api/geocode/xml?address=10+Downing+St,London&sensor=false;
but 
http://maps.google.com/maps/api/geocode/xml?address=10+Downing+St&ie=UTF8&ll=51.000,0.000&radius=200miles&sensor=false
will return something I wouldn't necessarily have thought of.
(Substitute json if you like; my browser handles xml better)
