I was interested in a similar feature but was told that due to Copyright and
legal issues Google has not been able to offer that in the API.

It is available through the regular Google Maps, but they have a lot of
legal loop holes to go through in order to offer this feature.

There is a feature request around here somewhere. If you do some digging
you should be able to find it and more detailed reasons as to why it isn't
available atm.
