fair enough, Rossko. You've been incredibly helpful and informative,
so far so I guess I deserved that. I try to emulate the things that
work but I'm only vaguely aware of what the various components do,
which complicates matters. I'm not lazy about this - I debug on three
browsers (because sometimes one will tell you what went wrong where
the other two are reporting no errors) - and every post here (and I
admit there have ben a few...) represents at least 50 tried and failed
uploads. I know it looks like I'm doing the same thing over, but
that's the problem with not understanding how something works in the
first place - it's very hard to modify it.

I guess I should just get myself a javascript book and actually learn
about this stuff.

Anyway. I'll try to keep my questions API-related in the future. If
you want a status report on this particular issue, I believe I have
emulated the show() hide () function that was working, but all I
managed to do was remove that one arrow that I did have.
