cool. so the only place my code works is on the web's most hated
browser. :(

but what I'm thinking now is that I have a function which checks to
see if the function has already been run, and if it has, I can do
stuff, which seems to be solving half the problem. At the moment the
only thing that looks vaguely promising is removing the marker...
which does basically just that. If I try to call the startAnimation
function again, everything goes pear-shaped. The semi-solution's at

is there not some variable that I'm missing that needs to be
reinitiated? or something?
