Could be CSS setting the background-color of images. Could be IE's handling of PNG transparency/opacity, which can lead to transparent parts of images not being transparent. Since you are using a Google Ridefinder icon which does work correctly, it is nothing to do with the API code you posted. That is why the posting guidelines for the group ask very pointedly for a link, so we can see exactly what you see.
