I don't know anything about markerclusterer or what you've tried already, but being that nobody else is stepping up, I'll risk a couple of possibly irrelevant and useless suggestions: Your markers seem to be getting made by the standard process (leaving the clusterer to, uh, cluster), so I would suspect that you can manipulate them in the standard way. The documentation (http:// code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/v2/ overlays.html#Custom_Icons) is actually quite thorough when it comes to setting up custom icons and I see in your code you aren't using some of those techniques, either for creating a custom shadow or resizing the icon. I don't see any infowindow call in your code, either. Part 1 of Mike's tutorial (http://econym.org.uk/gmap/basic1.htm) goes into this, and the following parts add some fancy stuff.
