Yes the table needs to be public for the map to show*. But surely if you putting the data on a map, its public anyway.
You said you where plotting all the lines on the map - meant the data had to be in javascript (or accessible by javascript, such as xml, or json) then it would of been readable too. You can't put data online and not have public, if it can be viewed, it can be copied. Although you can put technical restrictions (mainly around only allowing small portions to be viewed at any one time) to make it harder. * Unless you subscribe to Google Maps API Premier.
