Different browsers do things in different ways. In this case, it looks like IE has it right. You are creating a div and appending it to the map, and then setting its position to the top left. IE is positioning it at the top left of the map, and then getting the map tiles, which cover it. Firefox is positioning it relative to the page (and it's at the top left, not top right). The correct way to add something to the map is to create a custom GControl; or you can use GControlPosition instead without going to the trouble of creating a custom control.
