interesting.

for those of you who missed the email, version 1 (which had the divs
displaying on top of the Earth layer in Windows, but hid them
underneath on a Mac) appended the divs directly on to the map div (or
that's my understanding of it anyway).

Version 2 (the screenshots from above) uses Mike's method from here:
http://econym.org.uk/gmap/controlpos.htm to append the divs to the map
container (again, my interpretation may be way off).

What's even more interesting is that version 2 seems to work better on
Mac, version 1 better on windows... here are my findings with version
2 on windows:

Firefox 4: Partial fail. The input box and the "disable auto pan" divs
are visible, but the Search button next to the input box at the top
left there disappears.
IE 8: Total fail. Both divs and the button disapear.
Chrome 11: Total fail, same as IE8.

Testing on XP.

Using version 1, all three browsers had partial fail results, exactly
the way it is working on FF now.

So it looks like if this is really important, you get to choose if you
want it to work on mac OR windows. Or see if you can get both
approaches working at the same time without messing each other up...
