Interesting, because the way I understand it, browsers only stopped supporting Gears when they started supporting W3 geolocation, so either one or the other should work. You really need to look at the errors reported in the browser that is having problems - it's nearly impossible to say what's going on otherwise. The other, truly cross-browser option would be to center the map according to the user's IP address - not as accurate, but pretty much guaranteed a result. You need to query a database for this, which you have to pay for (mostly) but here is a free alternative: http://www.ipinfodb.com/ In my case, it centers the map about 1km away from the W3 approach (and both are still wildly off).
