Lol, a link is totally unnecessary, I have just worked out what the problem 
is, and yes you are on the right track Larry.

I needed to include the www. prefix when I call GDownloadUrl. Previously I 
did not include it and so it was not working when I included the www. prefix 
in the browser, it was nothing to with replacing the kml file, it just 
happens that every time I had tested it before I had also omitted the www 
prefix in the browser so I never had the issue.

Curiously, if I include the www. prefix in the code, the code works both 
ways in the browser (with and without the www).
