...although the update on that indicates that Maps Labs will continue,
so one might reasonably expect the markers not to die, too. Perhaps
this should be tried in a Version 3 map and mentioned in the Version 3
Group so that Google actually notice.

I agree there. We either make things look like Google Maps or expend
an enormous amount of effort developing workarounds; or go somewhere
else.
