I want to accomplish such a simple thing but I'm pulling my hair out
because it keeps failing. I run a photography website that allows
users to upload geotagged photos. If detected, I will then want to
display a simple map zoomed in on those coordinates. The map should be
next to the image, in the sidebar.

Here's a simple test page:

http://ferdy.dnsalias.com/apps/jungledragon/image/3/leaf.html

You'll notice that the map is wrongly positioned. No worries, this is
just a tech test to see if the map itself is correct. It is, it shows
the right coordinates.

On the test page, the map canvas div is positioned directly below the
body element. This, however, is where it should be in the page
hierarchy:

html -> body -> wrapper -> content -> aside -> mapcanvas

When I place it there, nothing gets rendered. I did figure out that if
I set the height of ALL parent elements to 100% it does render in the
sidebar. The problem is, I cannot do that, as it breaks all kinds of
things in my layout. Why can't I just render the map as a block in the
sidebar without having to change the entire layout rules of the site?
