I used colspan to reduce the size of code I guess. If the table was 3 rows and columns then the cell containing the tooltip would look awful if it was tiling, and if it was an image - it would stretch the tooltip resulting in unfavorable results. If it were 5 rows and columns -that could work alright but again I didn't see the use for the extra cells,so I combined them. Unless you're hinting at something else.
I can imagine using a single image file would again stretch and thus blur and smear as it scales. Althought that would be a lot easier.
