The easy suggestion is use the Page Speed tool and follow as many of it's suggestions as possible: http://code.google.com/speed/page-speed/
I also noticed that the slowest load was the custom markers. They look nice, but every one is unique. If there is any way possible, combine the markers into sets of files and use CSS sprites (supported as part of the V3 markers). This will help dramatically.
