This will indeed work.

However, be sure to load V2 API first, such that your document
structure is now

<script src="http://maps.google.com/maps?
file=api&amp;v=2.x&amp;key=XXXXXXXXXX"></script>
<script src="http://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?sensor=false";></
script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var V3 = google.maps;
</script>

And so forth...

I have tested this and it works (see my example below)
