It causes bloat - both in the DOM & in the SVG support modules. It is
a precursor to some new fangled control gadgetry. I would like to be
sure I have a way to "opt-out". Please stay focused on keeping the
API clean & simple.

Also, please provide a way to access 3.29. It was the last one I
could run without "Sorry we do not have imagery here" errors.

What if the missing tile indication originated at the server rather
than the browser ? You could produce an error message quickly &
reliably without using timers. You have one generic blue tile for
water. You could have one generic tile for missing tiles. Virtual
Earth uses a circle with a diagonal line. It is language
independent. Your static maps do something similar for a bad request.
