If you are in the US, you can obtain shapefiles from the Bureau of
Transportation Statistics:
http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transportation_atlas_database/2009/
The BTS shapefiles are derrived from the US Census Department's Tiger
Line database but are much more user friendly. The Tiger Line files
are much larger & lack some of the useful auxilliary information
provided by BTS.
I have a couple of demos based on BTS shapefiles.
See:
http://www.polyarc.us
Specifically "Lake Michigan Shore" & "Pacific Coast Highway".
Also, "US Highways" is an unrealistic "torture test" to determine how
many polys cause a browser to crash.
I have never had much luck with the direction finder service. It is
difficult to force it follow a particular route without adding a lot
of waypoints. The practical limit on waypoints is approximately ten
even though the documentation claims 25. It is due to a very verbose
GET URL which exceeds the length limit in some browsers.
