For several hundred markers, you can use small custom icons without shadows. You will still have to have individual "click" event listeners for every marker. For several thousand markers, you can use CANVAS or SVG for standards compliant browsers or VML for Internet Explorer. You will be able to combine your separate "click" event listeners into a single "click" event listener to service multiple markers. Clustering of markers is another option.
