Yes, they are custom tiles. I'd like to prevent the image from
repeating horizontally and vertically, if it's possible. Let me know
if you (or anyone out there) are interested in seeing the source of
what i've done.
Basically i just follow the code generated by the ImageCutter
application found here: 
http://www.casa.ucl.ac.uk/software/googlemapimagecutter.asp

By the way, you mentioned about google playground, and i tried it
before posting this. I'm not sure if it supports looking at local
folders for images. Since my code involves custom tiles, it needs the
images generated by ImageCutter. I can send the code plus the images
through email though...
