CSS classname is a tricky attribute.
Some browsers obey
div.setAttribute("class", "whatevertheclassis");
and some others:
div.setAttribute("classname", "whatevertheclassis");
AFAIK, the cross browser solution is:
div.className = "whatevertheclassis";
