Thanks for the investigation William. As Argg pointed out, it's also
memory related. In standard mode IE8 eats up memory like crazy while
the markers slowly appear. It races right up to 300MB just zooming/
panning around on my site a few times. Not good.

I filed issue 2415 (http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/
detail?id=2415) for this.

I'm now looking into switching my page over to quirks mode, but I hate
to do that.
