I raised an issue regarding V3 map event click handlers vs V2 http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=2395 I also raised the issue as case through maps premier support. I was using overlay property of the V2 map click event to set up a single event listener for all markers. A quick question, what do you mean by "If you then release the Marker instance"?
