Hi I would have a look at the Maps Data API which allows you to query on the data in KML file and return only the 'features' you require. There is a session covering how to do this in the Google i/o 2010 Videos. It looks to be straight forward and it could (end June ?) return a jsonc object which is easier to handle. Have not had to use it yet but it looks like a winner to me.
