What I find odd is that this works fine in Chrome and Firefox, but seems specific for IE. Passing across the south point as well appears to kick up this error from time to time as well, so it's not just for due north. However, if you pan around to change the angle ever so slightly it works fine. If you look at the other crossroad I mention due north works but due south doesn't.
