I don't know your exact situation, but if your aim is to zoom in on the kml set of markers so that only a limited number are shown which equate to about a particular radius, then look at zooming the viewport in to a known level.
ie Level 8 at 500px square shows 1 square mile (thats a rough guess by the way) Its works as a kind of poor mans "show within radius" - all of the kml layer is there but you are only showing a subset.
