Empirically, I've discovered that this happens frequently, it's by
design, and you can't change it.

Compare the results from
  brick lane
which will be equivalent to
  brick lane uk
if google thinks (from your ip address) that you're in the UK, and
  brick lane us
if google thinks that you're in the USA.

Google will never return more than 10 results, as there might well be
thousands of brick lanes worldwide.

You also need to be aware of this:
When you sumbit a geocode api query, say 'sousse tunisia', you'll get
3 results. In googlemaps, you'll only get 1, at least here in
Switzerland I only get one.
On occasions, 2 (or more) of the results will have identical
formatted_address so you can't use that field to disambiguate, your
only option is to use the lat/long.

In this example, your 3 formatted_addresses might be (I'm making this
up for lack of real data here at work):
  Sousse, Tunisia
  Sousse, Medina, Tunisia
  Sousse, Tunisia
each with its own lat/long.
