After posting this I realized that I wasn't really using v3... after I came across the problem, I tried using v3 to solve the problem, and after I changed the version number of the requested javascript file and concluded that v3 was backwards API compatible as it ran just fine unmodified. Later, though, I found out that I was doing things wildly different from the only way described in the online reference - I was doing them the v2 way...
