Mercator designed his projection to be useful for navigation, i.e. mapping large features (oceans, islands) on the surface of a globe onto flat sheets of paper. It does allow very accurate localization, to the nanometre if you can get your data good enough. It is true that Mercator is not ideal for drawing floorplans. It is a map, not an architectural aid. But ... unless your buildings are very very large, any distortion due to Mercator will be insignificant. Maybe you can show us what your problem is exactly? Are you believing that some GPS reading is accurate, just because there are lots of decimal places? Are you using different coordinate systems?
