A question about how Google maps works.

When I have a map displayed and change its orientation, by dragging or
zooming, the "system" often has to retrieve new map tiles from Google. What
sort of caching mechanism is employed? Does a Google map application rely
only on the browser cache? Or does every use of a specific tile (i.e.,
location /zoom level) have to be retrieved over the 'net whenever it is
needed?

Regards,

Bill Lee
