You will have to code that yourself if you want something different
from what the directionsRenderer gives you.
I was suggesting a directionsRequest for the 1st 50 miles, displaying
that, doing the same for each segment.  That obviously won't work for
a cross country trip, but might have worked for trips of a few hundred
miles.

But you weren't clear about your requirement or why you need to do
this.

I mean the number of requests you can make per date is subject to a
quota as specified in the documentation (you will get an
OVER_QUERY_LIMIT status response), to prevent abuse google also
implements a rate limit to prevent one person from overloading their
servers.
