The Maps API is very powerful and flexible. You can build just about any
kind of map you want with it.

However...

The API is a toolkit for JavaScript programming. Do you know how to write
JavaScript code? Or have you programmed in any other languages before? If
not, you have a very big learning curve ahead of you.

Building a Maps API application is a perfectly reasonable way to learn
JavaScript along with the API itself, but don't expect that you'll be able
to just copy bits and pieces of code out of the various API samples and have
it work. I've seen too many people try to build Maps API applications
without taking the time to actually learn JavaScript, and that is a recipe
for a great deal of frustration and confusion.

I don't want to discourage you from tackling Maps API development, just to
give you realistic expectations.
