The example doesn't work in any browser because the request for data, http://gmaps-samples-v3.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/articles/phpsqlsearch/phpsqlsearch_genxml.php?lat=34.0203132&lng=-118.2819747&radius=25 returns the php code, not xml. It appears that Google's server is not set up to interpret php and simply serves it instead. You need to implement the example yourself.
