You can do whatever you want with the API. Unless you are asking about KML, in which case, if you use KmlLayer, you are subject to the behavior of that. Please, please, please provide a link to your map that exhibits whatever problem you are having (as requested in this groups posting guidelines) so we don't have to guess.
