Performance degrades as markers are added. Some browsers and devices do better than others. Acceptable performance is completely subjective, if you will be having a lot of interaction with the map your requirement may be more stringent than if it were a fairly static display. So it's your decision. Most folk seem to feel that more than a couple of hundred is unacceptable. Visible clutter on the map increases as you place more markers, the user is less able to take in the information at a glance. Small maps and/or large or varied marker icons may exaggerate the problem.
