The recommended document type by the documentation is HTML5 <!DOCTYPE html>
If you mean pure XHTML with media type 'application/xhtml+xml'. I know that is very fragile but why even try to use it? Touching prototype of native Object is also very fragile and basically forbidden by most javascript gurus I have read.
