You can specify the previous version of the API by adding v=3.3 in the
API script tag.  
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/basics.html#Versioning
This will prevent you from getting weekly updates to the API.

I am not sure what you mean that your icons are "limited to the centre
of the screen."  The map looks great to me!  Perhaps you can attach a
screenshot of what it looks like at version 3.3 and another at the
current version (no version specified).
