Huh. You'd think that Google would ensure that this works from Chrome, which is my normal browser. I just tried it from Firefox and it worked fine. From Chrome I get an error. At https://code.google.com/apis/console/#project:462917705287 Firefox shows me on/off switches. Chrome shows me on/off switches for everything EXCEPT Places API, for which it shows a link "Request access". Clicking on that link generates an error. Flipping the switch in Firefox simply turned on the API. And now that Places API is enabled, Chrome now shows me the on/off switch. This is weird. Anyway, problem solved.
