Thanks for the tips and links, I'm gonna check them out today.

As for why I need more than a thousand markers on the map, I can't
tell too much but the idea is that users can select coordinates from a
list and when a coordinate is selected, it should show on the map. The
idea is to have a huge amount of available coordinates as well.
Clustering is not an option as each marker should be represented by 1
user.
