Thanks J. What I am trying to do is plot an arbitrary map, of a made up place. It's a very simple "place", with a blue line for a river and some things of interest around it that I want to highlight using arrows/annotations. Since it is a made up place, it does not have a latitude or longitude.
What I would really like to do is use google mapping apis to plot it and show it on my page. I can scan it and give it some "gps" coordinates in our space. And use these coordinates to annotate. The nice thing about the apis are the controls a user has in panning, zooming, etc. Plus, be able to control the arrows etc based on some user selections on the side. A close example would be a map of a mall, and if a user selected "food" then only eateries will be marked out, and so on.
