I've noticed this effect as well, and always wondered if anyone figured out 
a way to get the production tiles, or at least a few versions closer. 
Pointing to the production version of the API instead of a stable subversion 
(aka, v=3 instead of v=3.4) doesn't seem to make any difference. The 
attached screenshots show the difference. Many of the detailed places you 
see in the maps tiles are places my inspectors would like to see in the API 
tiles.
