So I've solved this problem. Posting a solution for posterity.

To create the map, I had created a LatLngBounds for the city area that
I was interested in. When the route had to be drawn, it was falling
out of the bounds, and was thus throwing up an error. By removing the
'fitBounds' property, everything is hunky dory once again!
