Ah.... I'm no Java expert, but if you have a java version working somewhere, I'd use wireshark to sniff the connection between your java app and Google to determine what the actual URL is being called that produces the results you want. Once you have the URL you should be able to see what parameter is missing or if something is not formated correctly in your original query.
