Okay, I've done more research (as it has worked for me more recently than that), and it seems like the bug/feature depends on the number of columns in the gadget data range. I've shared a spreadsheet with you with examples and more detail.
Would it be better for me to port this spreadsheets-converter over to Apps Script? It seems like that API is becoming more developed than the gadgets one. I'm not familiar enough to know if this falls into the sort of thing you'd do with it, though. Thanks!
