I am glad to know that I am in good company here. In order to get the
solution that I am working on now I found a great library of Excel
libraries for PHP and build the spreadsheet and put in formatting,etc...
and then using the GDoc api push the spreadsheet to the G documents. There
are problems here though. If you put any drop down menu validations in the
spreadsheet, they are gone when it goes to the G documents. If you do this
manually they drop as well.

Currently I can't figure out how to take a spreadsheet and simply put it
into a collection.

Live updating of the spreadsheet looks to be a pain as well.
