There was nothing in the documentation, even back when superior
documentation was available, about the format of error responses.  It's
pretty much look at at the HTTP response code, and the body of the HTTP
response as text/plain, and make an informed guess about what went wrong

The standard HTTP error code families 4xx, 5xx, et. al. pretty much
summarise what can go wrong with REST-ful request, and your program can
look at these and made at least some decisions.

Are you sure you need to use this API?  It's a dead duck.
