First, apologies for the double-post, and the needless post in the first place, but I found the answer at http://groups.google.com/group/google-talk-open/browse_thread/thread/cf536aebf2f31fad/a011d7544050d01d?lnk=gst&q=code+503#a011d7544050d01d and it looks like the subscription thing is the issue. This seems very odd to me as well. I understand why the decision was made though, as it integrates more tightly with gmail this way.
