Never got any responses on this, but we've made some progress.
The first problem we had was that libjingle insists on speaking SASL,
whereas jabberd14 doesn't support SASL by default (need the separate c2s
auth daemon to make this work). For this and other reasons, we ended up
scrapping jabberd14 and going with ejabberd, and auth started working, no
problem.
The next problems were libjingle not responding correctly to some stanzas
sent by ejabberd. I wasn't very involved in getting this to work, but our
engineer made some changes in the libjingle source code and things look good
now: libjingle is authing, registering and IMing with ejabberd.
